Purpose.
The purpose of this bulletin is to inform all hospital leaders and staff responsible for the
support of devices running Android Voalte MeTM with Voalte Platform ServersTM 3.3 and higher
about a recently discovered issue regarding notification delivery.
Background.
Starting with Android Marshmallow 6.x, Google introduced battery-saving features, such as
Doze mode, that may cause a delay in notifications pushed from Google Cloud Messaging
(GCM) to a "sleeping" application. Voalte PlatformTM notifications may be included. The delay
depends on factors that include:
The exact Android OS version in use: Marshmallow or higher
How long the device has been idle
Other notifications from other applications arriving on the device
The battery level of the device, which may place the device in a deep power saving mode
Whether the phone is stationary or in motion
In general, all pending notifications will be delivered when the screen is on and the device is
unlocked. They will also be delivered at the same time as any other incoming notification that
causes the screen to light up.
Impact.
Voalte Me Android users running the Marshmallow operating system or higher may not get
actively notified when receiving an incoming notification.
Android and iOS Voalte OneTM and iOS Voalte Me users are not affected.
Next steps.
Voalte has developed a module that runs on the Voalte Platform Server(s) within your
organization and escalates the priority of outgoing GCM push messages so they will be
delivered to and displayed by the device in a timelier manner.
Installation of the module does not require any downtime. Voalte Systems Engineers will
install this module automatically after November 26, 2018. If you wish to schedule it sooner,
please reach out to Voalte Support.
