Adding a new iOS non-Voalte VPP Application in WorkSpace One

High-level overview of adding a new iOS application- https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workspace-ONE-UEM/1810/vmware-airwatch-guides-1810/GUID-AW1810-MD_DvcBsd_Ovrvw.html

Adding Application to Environment

  1. Purchase licenses of application on VPP account that correlates to the sToken uploaded in your environment. Voalte's recommendation for free applications is to purchase a number of licenses equal to your current deployment x 10. This helps us avoid provisioning snafus when new devices are added.
  2. Navigate to org level where VPP token is uploaded→ Apps & Books→ Native Applications→ Purchased→Sync, wait a few seconds, then refresh
  3. Find app you added, click on the name of the app, and click "Enable Device Assignment" under License Info tab (this should be the default tab)
    1.
    2. if B2B you will need to configure it- see Adding B2B Application to AW
  4. Click on Save & Assign to assign the app to a Smart Group.

Testing the Application and Push

Voalte insists as best practice to test the application and push prior to pushing to all devices. This helps ensure that necessary ports are open to push a VPP application, that profiles are configured correctly, that the app actually installs, and that the app behaves in the way the customer expects.

  1. Navigate to child org you are pushing to, and go to Groups & Settings→ Groups→Assignment Groups→ Add Smart Group
    1. Name the group "[Hospital] [Device] [Application] Test"
    2. For Group Type choose "Select Devices or Users"
    3. Add one test device SN
  2. Navigate to Devices→ Profiles and Resources→ Profiles→ Restrictions Profile→ Click the pencil to edit
    1. If the Restrictions profile is configured to "Hide Apps" then click cancel
    2. If the Restrictions profile is configured to "Show apps" then click "Add Version" and add in the newly synced app, then Save and Publish
      1. You may have to enter the bundle ID if you cannot find the app in the list
      2. Editing this profile has no user impact on iOS devices
  3. Navigate to the customer org→ Apps & Books→ Native Applications→ Purchased→ Click on the name of the application you enabled
    1. Click Save & Assign→ Add Assignment→ Add Assignment→ Type in the name of your Test smart group
    2. Allocate at least 5 licenses for testing
      1. You can allocate more if the customer would like to, but we want to ensure that this group isn't used for production, so the fewer the better
    3. Enable "Make App MDM Managed if User Installed"

    4. Save, Save and Publish
  4. Navigate to child org you are pushing to, and go to Groups & Settings→ Groups→Assignment Groups→ Test Group
    1. Add additional test devices by SN

Pushing the Application out to All Production Devices

For a production push we want to use the existing "3rd Party Apps" group that is assigned to all auto users. If you do not have a group by this name please reach out to Support. This process assumes that Testing the Application Push has already been completed.

  1. Navigate to the customer org→ Apps & Books→ Native Applications→ Purchased→ Click on the name of the application you enabled
    1. Click Save & Assign→ Add Assignment→ Add Assignment→Type in "3rd Party Apps"
    2. Allot the maximum number of licenses minus 10- this helps us edit this group in the future in case licenses are set Externally Redeemed in WS1.
    3. Enable "Make App MDM Managed if User Installed"
    4. Save, Save and Publish

Pushing the Application out to a Subset of Production Devices - Details Incoming

There are a few ways to push out an application to a subset of devices.

  • Per device
  • Per enrollment user
  • With Tags (iOS + GC, ADR)
