A webclip is an application icon on a device that will act as an application, however it will open a webpage using a Web Browser application on the device. Our goal with Webclips is to make sure they work, while also securing them to now allow users to access any page they want.
You can use the native Safari application on the iPhone to open Web Pages so that you don’t have to install any new applications. Please keep in mind that someone will need to accept a prompt the first time they try to open a Weblink on a device. A Ground Control backup will persist this option. To setup:
Restrictions profile changes - No user impact
Enable Safari in the Restrictions profile and add to Shown Apps
Add a webapp application to be shown or not hidden in the Restrictions profile (com.apple.webapp- this does not have to be installed separately)
Enable a Content Filter payload
We add this to the existing Restrictions payload. It is a Restriction of sorts, and this would prevent a scenario where a user might have access to Safari but not the filter. The payload acts as a whitelist to only allow users to access specific pages on the browser.
Add any websites you want users to be able to access in this space
Home Screen Profile - Minimal impact. They may see application disappear from home page as it is moved to hidden
Add Safari to the hidden folder on page 2 or 3 of the device so that users are only accessing pages through the webclip. This avoids a misconception that the browser is open and usable.
